It made people racists which still occurs today. The slaves were downgraded to the status of property and thusly were owned. They weren't even second class citizens. They were animals that justified why they were treated so horribly. Just recently in American history were the colored able to mix with the white. It made people think they were dumb, undeserving, and basically nothing. Clearly that's not the case, but that concept is still around today.
