Most southerners weren't for the war, they just wanted freedom from the North and the ability to own slaves. Less than 5% of the people in the South owned even a single slave. The South was agricultural and exports of agricultural products were taxed. The North was industrialized and the import of finished products was taxed. Before the Civil War 85% of the national budget was collected in the southern states.
