Union captains in the Union's blockading efforts faced logistical problems that hampered their efforts to tighten the blockade of Southern ports. Theoretically the use of steam powered ships increased efficiency, however, there were also drawbacks. These involved maintenance and supply, which negated the expected improvements. For example, fleets of blockading ships required as much as 3,000 pounds of coal per week to keep the ships powered. This was clearly a problem as coal needed to be shipped to the blockaders or the blockaders themselves would have to dock at friendly Union ports to load on more coal.
Blockade the Southern ports, to prevent the Confederacy importing war material in exchange for cotton.
yes
they wanted to go and do stuff
Yes. the Anaconda plan,as it is called, had these three parts: 1. Blockade southern ports 2. Cut the confederacy in half (take control of the Mississippi river) 3. Invade Virginia and capture the confederate capital (Richmond)
Because it made sure that the south could not sell or recieve goods. It ruined their economy.
To blockade the Confederate Ports, intercepting the blockade runners and hunt down the Confederate cruisers, which were trying to capture or sink the Union merchant ships, throughout the seas.
Stopped them exporting their plentiful cotton in exchange for much-needed war-supplies from abroad.
The naval blockade prevented the Confederacy from receiving supplies from Britain(mostly). It also prevented goods from shipping out so the money which would otherwise be made by this commerce was reduced. In an effort to defeat the blockade "Blockade Runners"were used. These were low-profile,fast ships that could sometimes get past the larger Union Navy ships and make it to port.
During the first nine months of the US Civil War, the Union's blockade of Southern ports was not successful. In the year ending in 1861, nine out of ten ships eluded the Union's efforts. One reason was that the Northern navy simply needed more ships. Union shipyards were busy trying to fix that problem. Union shipyards had the great advantage of being geographically safe from harm. The Rebel army was just too far away.
