Deserters fled to Canada for protection. Confederate spies in Canada tried to recruite men to fight for the South. Some rebels devised a plan to move from Canada to Vermont to raid and pillage the towns to gather food and supplies for the Confederate armies. Canada was unofficially involved in the civil war, however when the U.S. complained to Britain about Canada's practices (Canada was under British rule at the time) Britain forced Canada to stop what they were doing, and the Confederates never got the chance to get to Vermont.
