It would appear that medieval people did not use scrolls much at all. According to the article on Scrolls at Wikipedia, they virtually disappeared from use during the Middle Ages. In the same source, the article on the Book says that the codex came to dominate over the scroll with the rise of Christianity, in the 3rd and 4th centuries. Egyptians no longer use scrolls to record and transmit information. Ancient scrolls that have survived until this day are still studied by academics and researchers, and are otherwise carefully preserved and stored. Some cultures and religions still use scrolls for ceremonial or religious purposes (such as Torah scrolls or Hanging scrolls).
