In a way. They weren't actually called Mermaids. Many people say the Greek form of a mermaid was a siren or sea nymph, because they are sometimes depicted with fish tails. Most culture often get their own mythical inspiration from other or older cultures. That's why some mythical beings from different religions or myths look so similar
