Actually the term "Kamikaze" means "Divine Wind," referring to a Typhoon that destroyed the invasion fleet of the Mongols trying to invade Japan. The term could be applied to any suicide method, and there were more methods than just crashing planes into ships.

One was called by the Americans the "Baka Bomb," (Crazy or Fool) because it was sort of a torpedo with wings. It was carried by a bomber to the area of the fleet, released and the bomb glided (with steering possible) towards a ship. Later they put rockets on the "plane" so that it could be released further away from our ships which were defended by aircraft. Plus the bomb was so fast it could get through the anti-aircraft weapons of our navy.

They also made torpedoes that could be launched from submarines, but contained a volunteer that would steer the torpedo to its target. The weapon was difficult to steer, but some did score hits. (The weapon was not fired by the sub, but was carried on the deck of the sub, and launched from the sub while underwater. One was launched at the Indianapolis. People still argue if the weapon hit the ship or not.

There were high speed boats filled with explosives. They would be driven into a ship, though probably more likely into landing craft. I have never read of any of these being used. They were probably being saved for our invasion of Japan.

I'm sure there were other things that do not come to mind, or that I am unaware of, perhaps others can add to the list above.

Hope this helps, John

When were airplanes used as weapons in war?

In World War II the Axis powers turned their airplanes into weapons during Kamikaze missions. The Japanese are the most famous for this. Kamikaze missions were suicide missions, so the pilots flew to a target and aimed their plane to the ground and BOOM. Kamikaze missions were also prevalent in sea battles where one plane could take out an entire ship.

Why did kamikaze start?

The Japanese military leaders were desperate to stop American invasion fleets beginning in 1944. Conventional air attacks by the Japanese Army & Navy units had suffered heavy casualties in air attacks on the US Navy ships that had very effective Anti-Aircraft weapons. By 1944, the Japanese were suffering heavy losses with few hits on the US ships. The Japanese had long-practiced military suicide attacks in ground combat, and now the Kamikaze suicide mission was the next logical (or emotional) step in the evolution of Japanese tactics in the face of a very dire situation.

What were the kamikaze weapons?

Airplanes.

What were kamikaze pilots in world war2?

Kamikaze pilots were Japanese suicide pilots in World War 2. Because of limited armaments and lack of skilled pilots, young men were trained to fly their planes, loaded with explosives, into US ships. The word kamikaze means "divine wind."As with other air attacks on the US Navy, improved anti-aircraft weapons meant that very few of the kamikazes made it to their target. However, one or two would be enough to severely damage or sink a large warship, especially if they hit an ammunition magazine or fuel bunker.

Did Japanese POWs commit suicide when captured?

Suicide is and was practiced by all people of all nations at some time or another; always have, and always will. Japanese servicemen were trained NOT to surrender. Allied propaganda simply exaggerated suicides and applied it to further the propaganda missions. Example: According to the allies, Kamikaze pilots committed suicide by crashing their airplanes into allied warships. This is true. And according to propaganda guidelines, this statement would be distributed. But this portion, the reason why, would not be distributed: Kamikaze pilots were to guide their bomb carrying airplanes into the allied warships; Mission: Destroy one plane for one ship. Unfortunately, the pilot goes with the plane (destroyed). The purpose of propaganda is to lower the morale of the enemy and raise the morale of the allies, so you don't want to print and distribute the wrong WORDS. In the days before "smart weapons", a manned flying bomb was the next best thing. The Kamikaze wasn't "intending" to commit suicide (simply for the sake of dying), but if he can trade his one life for 300 lives (the complement of a US Fletcher class US Navy Destroyer), then that's a bargain! Japanese fighting men (Airmen, Marines, Sailors, and Soldiers) faced possible death by a firing squad if they disgraced their country or regiment. Surrendering was a disgrace. Like ancient Sparta, fighting men were SUPPOSED to die in battle. Failing that, they best not shame their countrymen by surrendering...so suicide became an un-welcome option. Bottom line: (Sometimes) If a fighting man doesn't take his own life, the firing squad might do it for him.

Why did japan start using kamikaze attacks?

The kamikaze was used by Japan because japan was losing the war and the kamikaze were their last hope.....Actually who said this other answer, you are wrong.
