Yes. According to long Jewish oral tradition, later recorded in the the Babylonian Talmud (Yoma 22b), the Second Temple lacked five things which had been in Solomon's Temple, namely, the Ark of the Covenant, the sacred fire, the Shekinah, the Holy Spirit, and the Urim and Thummim.

Was the Ark of the covenant in second temple?

No. The last time the ark of the covenant is mentioned was in the first temple, or Solomons temple, in Chronicles 35:3 during the reign of Josiah of Judah. This was about 623 b.c.. This was only about 30 years before Babylon overthrew Judah and sent the remaining Jews into captivity. The ark was likely carried out of the city of Jerusalem by Levites (the Jewish Priestly Tribe),right before the invasion by Babylon, as the writing was on the wall for some time, as many prophets of that time told the Jews that Babylon is coming, and they will take Jerusalem, which of course they did. These Levites went with the ark into hiding. We never hear for certain of the where abouts of the ark of the covenant again, on earth. It is interesting that something as prominent as the ark of the Covenant is never mentioned again in scripture, appearing intentional, in order that it may be hid, it could seem. There is a story of a sect of Levites that went to Ethiopia with the ark, and guard it in secrecy till this day, letting no outsiders see it. This is a possibility, as there is a group in Ethiopia that have long claimed to be of Levite (The Jewish Priest Tribe) descent, and modern DNA testing has confirmed this group of people to be likely descendants of Levi, comparing with other known Jews that are of reported Levitical descent. Which is, no doubt interesting. There are many plans and preparations for the building of a third Jewish Temple at which time it is hoped that the whereabouts of the ark of the covenant will become known. This is possible, The Bible does clearly foretell there being a third temple built and it will be the Jewish Temple during the coming 7 year tribulation (see Matthew 24:15, Daniel 11:31 and 12:11), when the Antichrist will reign over a revived form of the Roman Empire. He will gain his reputation as an economic genius, and a master diplomat, negotiating the impossible, peace between the Jewish and Muslim world. This will involve solving the Temple mount dispute, allowing the Jews to rebuild their temple. Midway through this seven year tribulation, the Antichrist will waltz into the newly completed third Jewish Temple. He will go into the Holy of Holies, with live CNN world news coverage of course, and there proclaim himself God. Then proceed to turn on the Jewish people whom he made peace with, and proceed to attempt to exterminate the Jewish race, like a Hitler on steroids. Well, for him to be able to waltz into the temple in the middle of the tribulation to proclaim himself God, obviously there must be a temple in existence at that time, in order for that to happen. The Bible, while it is clear there will be a third temple built that will be standing during the seven year tribulation, it no where says that the ark of the covenant will be there. One last thing. The actual last mention of the ark of the covenant, called the ark of testimonies, is actually in Revelations 11:19. It is said to be in the Temple of God, in heaven. Whether this is the exact physical ark that was on earth or whether it is the real ark which the one on earth was merely a picture or a shadow of, as the Jewish Temple is said in Hebrews 8:5 to be a picture of the true temple of God in Heaven, I have no idea. But it is an interesting subject. That is about all that is known of the ark at this time, to go further is just conjecture and speculation.

Was the ark of the covenant temple never duplicated?

I was never duplicated. I believe, number one, that it is necessary for the Tribulation temple for the Ark of the Covenant to be there because of the fact that in order for the Jewish people who are preparing to build the temple right now, they must have the Ark of the Covenant. In the Millennial Temple which will be standing in Jerusalem during the Thousand-Year Millennial Kingdom, Jeremiah 3:16 says we don't need the Ark anymore. The reason for that, the Ark was a prototype of Jesus Christ, and when you have the real thing, you don't need the model. So He'll be here for the Millennial Temple, but for that Tribulation temple it will have to be there. Is it in Ethiopia? I do not believe so. I believe it is underneath the Temple Mount. I have talked to two men, two very prestigious rabbis who said they came within inches of bringing the Ark of the Covenant out. One man said he took a mirror, looked around a wall and saw the Ark of the Covenant. He was a very prestigious rabbi. I would not stake my life on it but I believe he's talking about what he said and he said, "By the way, that's simple. Extrabiblical writing tells us exactly where the Ark of the Covenant is. And the Bible talks about Hezekiah, I believe the king was, who said, "Take the ark and put it in the special place prepared for it right now." Not in the temple but a special place prepared. --Dr. Jimmy DeYoung--

There were two different groups. The Temple was run by the Priests and the Sanhedrin (Jewish court) was run by the Pharisees.

Which comes first the rebuilding of the temple or the second coming of Christ?

Many premillennial Christians advocate the position that the third temple will be constructed before Christ's second coming during the Great Tribulation, when the Antichrist, or the man of sin, will make a covenant (possibly a treaty will be signed between the Jewish people as an arranged accordance) with Israel for 7 years. After the Second Coming of Christ and following the final judgement, the Millennial Temple (AKA the fourth temple) will be constructed subsequently when Israel will be spiritually reunited with the Christians. After the Millennial Kingdom ends as noted in Revelation 20, during the Eternal State, when the New Earth and the New Heavens will be created, temples will no longer be necessary because God will be the primary temple.

Why is temple mount important?

The Temple Mount is the perported location that Abraham offered his son Isaac (the same mount). Granted, he did not actually kill him, but a ram was discovered stuck in a bush nearby and was made a substitute for Isaac. Abraham is a key figure in the Jewish/Christian/Islamic faiths. This Mount area later became the same spot that King Solomon built the Temple and placed the Ark of the Covenant in. During the time of the Christian's Messiah a new Temple had been erected : where that very Messiah was known to have visited. That Temple was destroyed by Rome, and later the Muslims took over the area and Built the dome of the Mosque...after which in 1948 the Jew's became a nation and had to share their given land/city with this objectionable Islamic Mosque. Some Christians believe that the Temple will be restored and sacrifices resumed (by Jewish priests)- a hard task indeed to have materialize!
