The Nina and the Pinta were small sailing vessels. These ships sank because of storms that were encountered in the Atlantic Ocean. Due to their size the ships were unable to handle the massive amounts of water that was encountered on board.
No. It turns out that those are the ships that survived! All three ships made it to the New World on October 12, 1492. As for the rest of the voyage...
"In November [1492], the Pinta disappeared in a strong wind. On December 25, 1492 (Christmas Day), the Santa Maria ran aground and was completely destroyed. Later, in January, the Pinta rejoined the Nina. Columbus returned to Spain on the Nina, arriving in March of 1493. The Pinta arrived soon afterwards."
The Santa Maria came aground in a Haitian bay, where Columbus founded a small town called "La Navidad", today's "Mole Saint-Nicolas".
La Santa Maria ran aground off of Haiti. She was partially dismantled to make fort on Hispañola.

They had collided with other ships. The Santa Maria had survived ( which was the last boat left ) and was used to travel back to Spain with Columbus and the other 120 men on board.
