Yes and no.

Every single major battle the US fought; Operation Hastings, Battle for Hue, Battle of Hamburger Hill, Tet, Battle of Ia'Drang Valley, Battle of Khe Sahn, and others

the US and its allies won.

Part of the reason for the loss of the overall war was the extreme guerrilla tactics used by the Viet Cong. As soon as the US and its allies would sweep and clear villages and suspected Viet Cong hideouts, more Vietcong and NVA would spring up and cause havoc.

The US basically did all it could other than just nuking Hanoi in an attempt to disable the communist government.

Another reason for the final withdrawal was the massive antiwar movements on the home front and the corruption of Nixon. Finally, with the invasion of Saigon by the NVA the US closed its embassy and left South Vietnam to its fate in 1975.

Although the end of the war was a neglect, the US and its allies did have a victory in the sense IF the US didn't try and stop the spread of Communism in Vietnam, it may have reached surrounding countries causing an even larger conflict down the track, so in a way the US and its allies helped stop the Spread of Communism out side of Vietnam giving the US a political victory for capitalism and democracy.

Why was helicopter gunships used as a us tactic in the Vietnam war?

Without the helicopter, the war might have gone on, for the US, for 20 or 30 years AFTER the Tonkin Gulf incident...or never have been fought at all; it was that important. The helicopter made the Vietnam War. Vietnam was a helicopter war.

Does anyone truly know what started the Vietnam War?

France controlled Vietnam up until WWII when Japan took it over. After WWII Japan was forced to give up the area. Vietnam began a strong Nationalist movement in the time that followed when France began to regain control of Vietnam. They fought up to where the line between North and South Vietnam used to exist. They later gave up after a bloody battle at Dienbenphu. Up until this point The US had merely been funding the war. The US was funding it for two reasons: one, to improve relations with France, and two, to stop the spread of communism. However after the French lost the US sent troops in (in smaller amounts at first) to keep North Vietnam from taking over South Vietnam thus making it communist. That's pretty much how it started. The French could not stand to see colonialism end. We were terrified of the word communism. The whole domino effect was bull. Put it all together and that spells war.

What are US military stars?

US Military Stars, are insignias: 1. From WWII up until the Vietnam War, US "Stars" were WHITE in color, and painted on practically everything: Tanks, trucks, jeeps, artillery pieces, ships, riverine boats, helicopters, and jet fighter bombers. After the Vietnam War, all "WHITE" stars were painted "BLACK" (called subdued). 2. Rank Insignia "Stars" indicate GENERAL'S in the US Army, US Marine Corps, and US Air Force. In the US Navy, "Stars" indicate an Admiral; Generals=Admirals. After the Vietnam War, all "Silver" stars worn on the uniform were painted "Black" (subdued), when worn on combat uniforms (called FATIQUES during the Vietnam War, Korean War, and World War Two).

When did drafting start in the Vietnam war?

The draft started before the US war in Vietnam. Your question is actually about when the USG started posting draftees to Vietnam. That would probably be in March 1966 when At Pres. Johnson announced a singificant build-up of US troop strength in March of that year. Prior to that, every announcement of further troop commitments included a statement that only volunteers were concerned.

What event led the us in the Vietnam war?

The French Indochina War most likely led to the (so called) American Vietnam War. Because the French war divided up the country into TWO nations; North & South Vietnams. When the communist led North Vietnam attempted to take over (conquer) South Vietnam... this led to US involvment.

Why didn't Vietnam take the US over after their victory in the Vietnam War?

Vietnam never had the ability to take over the US, any more than it had the ability to take over France two decades earlier. To make the enemy give up and go home was the Vietnamese objective, and it required a colossal effort just to accomplish that.
