Mao grew up in Shaoshan, Hunan Province. He attended school in Changsha, and later lived in Beijing and Shanghai. After the founding of the communist party, he was frequently "on the move" throughout the country, until 1949. From then until his death, he made his home at the Zhongnanhai Compound in Beijing.
In 1949, Mao Zedong (also spelled Tse-tung) and his communist guerrilla army (the Red Army) took control of Mainland China away from Chiang Kai- shek and his Nationalist forces. Guerillas are members of small military forces that generally make surprise attacks. Chiang Kai-shek and his forces then fled to Taiwan. Mao Zedong set up the People's Republic of China.
Mao could only speak his local dialect from Hunan. Ironically could not speak Putonghua(mandarin) even though he espoused it's proliferation across the country. As a young man he did try to learn Russian but, meeting with ridicule from his classmates and teachers regarding his ineptitude, gave up.
