Guam and Puerto Rico became US Territories. The US purchased the Philippines and spent the next few years fighting the Filipinos in a bloody and senseless revolt.
It fought for Cuban Independence, and to prevent the sale of the Philippines into the hands of Germany or Japan, it purchased the Philippines for $20 million. That purchase cost it 20 years of blood, sweat and toil plus millions in government support and private investment. It gained the lovely Pacific Island of Guam, and the often troublesome Puerto Rico which has never yet been capable of determining its own fate and waffles between Independence and statehood.
