Hawaii was not conquered at gunpoint. The USA annexed Hawaii and made it a territory. In other words the US pointed a cannon at Queen Likiokalani's palace and read a piece of paper stating that Hawaii now belonged to the US. No battle was fought, but the Queen was placed under house arrest. Some native Hawaiians have even made the comment, "Early European settlers on a mission first told Hawaiians to look up to God as their savior and as they were looking up... their land was stolen beneath them". During the Age of Imperialism, America wanted to expand its borders across the world in hopes that with more land by American rule that it would become more powerful and industrious than the other leading nations. That is true and proof is written in the Monroe Doctrine. However the United States offered and Hawaii wanted/needed protection as a state, against other eventual and destined foreign invasions, where the outcome could've been even more severe for Hawaiian people. They thought it would be better to accept a place in a democracy instead of risking attack by a communist country or Dictatorship. 1) Hawaii never needed protection. Since 1843 they signed a treaty with England, France and the US and it was clarified that the Hawaiian Kingdom would remain neutral in time of war among other nations. 2) Hawaii currently is used as a battle ground. In other words, people of Hawaii would suffer first, being the stepping stone from Asia to the continental US. So no, Hawaii is not being protected but rather protecting the US from major casualty. 3) In 1898 the Newlands Resolution, created by U.S. Congressman Francis G. Newlands was passed by Congress. This is a resolution where, according to the US Constitution, is used domestically only. The US has no jurisdiction outside of its boundries. That would be like anyone in the House of Representatives come up with some Resolution having Iraq become a territory of the USA and have the President approve it, and the people of Iraq will have no say in it. First of all, in the US Constitution Article II, Sec. 2 does state who has the power to make treaties. It isn't the House.

This could also be the same if they decided to do that to Mexico, without any type of agreement from the Mexican Government. 4) Prior to the summer of 1898, the newspapers of the US were criticizing the fact that Congress wanted to annex the Hawaiian islands. People back then were (as they are still now) racist against dark skinned people and really didn't want the islands to be part of the US. 5) The Hawaiian People never relinquished their sovereignty. 6) The US had a part in overthrowing the Queen in 1893 by way of Foreign Minister Stevens. There was a long investigation (Blount Investigation) prompted by President G. Cleveland to which the US found out that they were wrong and requested that the Queen be immediately be put back on the throne. 7) There are a total of 4 instances where the US has admitted its wrong doings in the overthrow of the Hawaiian Government.

1 - The Bount Investigation

2 - 1988 Legal Opinion entitled "Legal Issues Raised by the Proposed Presidential; Proclamation to Extend the Territorial Sea"

3 - 1996 legal opinion entitled Validity of Congressional-Executive Agreements that Substantially Modify the United States' Obligations Under an Existing Treaty"

4 - 1993's Apology Bill signed by President Clinton
It was stolen from the Monarchy by a small group of politically connected and wealthy American businessmen.
In 1893, with Queen Liliuokalani on the throne, American businessmen formed a Committee of Safety and declared the monarchy ended. In 1894, the Republic of Hawaii was established. On August 12, 1898, the government of the Republic transferred sovereignty to the United States. and Hawaii became a territory.
