The French had colonized Indochina to protect its interest in the Michelin rubber plantations. When Vietnamese nationalists rose up in arms to expel the French occupation, they succeeded at Dien Bin Phu, causing the French to give up and leave. Because of the U.S. participation with the South East Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO), America sent troops and supplies to help democratic South Vietnam defend itself from Communist North Vietnam.
