Yes, it was there only water supply. They also bathed in it, and cleaned themselves in it.

In ancient times water was normally collected from wells located along the banks of the river; this manged to filter the water to a certain degree from harmful pathogens.

Water was also cooled and filtered (and still is to present day) in baked clay pots; these act as water filters and remove silt and many pathogens from the water although it would probably still harboured certain bacteria.

The only relatively safe way to purify this water would be to boil it.

No; Egyptians did worship the Nile itself. They did, however, thank specific gods for their good fortune, much of which was due to the resources provided by the Nile.
