the 1861 springfield was of the cap and ball type. gun powder was poured down the barrel then a lead bullet was also tamped down the barrel over the powder. the powder was ignited with a percussion cap. if the powder was wet or damp, the rifle would not fire. the shooter would then have to place a worm screw on the end of his cleaning rod in order to extract the lead bullet and powder. as outlined note there is no bullet chamber other then the barrel itself.

No. It's not that the round is too powerful for the steel.The chamber isn't bored out deep enough and the bolt and loading mechanism aren't made for the cartridge length.It probably won't even chamber the round.If you do manage to get a round into the chamber, there's a good chance that the bullet will get distorted and it's going to get stuck in the barrel causing irreparable harm to the gun and quite possibly to you.

Not certain that I understand exactly what you are asking. If you are having a problem in that a cartridge will not fully seat in the chamber, it could be a couple of things. First, check that you have the correct ammunition for the gun in question. While that sounds very basic, it happens more often than you think. Next problem could be a foreign object in the chamber, or fouling from being shot. Clean the chamber with a chamber brush and powder solvent, check the chamber for things like a section of a cartridge case that tore off, and is stuck in place. Last, check the extractors- see that they are clean and free to move. Some firearms are designed to have the extractor slip over the rim when loading- if not free to move, the get caught behind the cartridge.

if it is stuck after it has been fired, it is evidence of a dirty or perhaps a corroded or an eroded chamber. The dirty part is easy to cure... clean it. The eroded or corroded chamber should be left to a gunsmith. Usually they can polish the chamber enough to make the sticky problem go away... however it will occur again at some future date. Upon firing, the brass flows into the irregular pits or groves in the chamber making extraction difficult. If it sticks when it is open, clean it and check for the alignment of the safety or the trigger sear position. If it needs more than cleaning, see a gunsmith. Keep in mind, Western Field is not exactly the "top of the line" equipment. I am not saying they are bad, however, maybe you should consider trading it off for a better quality firearm.

How do you use a ramrod puller?
The ramrod puller is used to remove bullets from a muzzle loader rifle without firing it or in the case of a mis-fire with a stuck bullet. The puller has a worm screw on the end of the ramrod or a pair of spiral wires. Drop the ramrod with the Puller on the tip into the barrel. Grip the ramrod and twist it such that the screw will dig into the bullet. Then pull on the ram rod to loosen the bullet and extract it.

This means the 9 mm cartridge will start to fall through the barrel of the .40 and will probably get stuck in the throat of the chamber. It is unlikely the cartridge will be able to be fired, but if per chance it were able to be fired, it would create a ver dangerous situation.

But if the bullet is a blank or less than lethal, it is usually made of wax, which is not toxic per se. But the bullets can stuck in your intestines, which can cause rupture and death. In any case, your stomach will be upset. The more you eat the more dangerous it is. You may not necessarily die straight from eating the bullets, but heavy metal poisoning can kill you slowly. Also, if you plan to eat the bullet with cartridge, explosives and all the amount of harmful chemicals are manifold. Answer to your question: you do not necessarily die from eating bullets, but it is advised you should not.
