The overall strategy of the Confederacy was to fight the war on the defensive.The South had no desire or intention to impose it's political will on the North,to conquer and then occupy the North. In the words on Confederate President Jefferson Davis..."all we want is to be let(left) alone". The South simply wanted its' independence. The Confederacy hoped to win enough battles and to survive long enough to bring about agreeable terms of peace.
