Almost certainly an Australian mchine gunner on the ground, who fired at the Baron's low-flying plane. This seemed apparent from the angle of the wound, with the bullet traveling upward through the body from the entrance wound in his side. But the man credited with the victory at the time, and still the official victor, was Canadian pilot Captain Arthur "Roy" Brown. Brown was a flight leader and the Baron was behind and shooting up one of his inexperienced pilots, when Brown made a desperate dive and got off a single short burst as he skidded by and below the Baron. But the Baron flew on for another two minutes after Brown got off his quick burst, something unlikely to have been possible given the nature of the wound, and how quickly the Baron expired after crashing. No one wanted to believe a lowly, mud-caked, foot-slogging, ground-pounding enlisted man could bring the Baron low - except, of course, the guy who actually did the shooting. This was most likely Australian Sergeant Cedric Popkin, or Gunner W. J. "Snowy" Evans, or Gunner Robert Buie, both also Australians.
No one is really sure. It was decided that it was either: -Snowy Evans (Australian) -Roy Brown (Canadian) -Sgt. Popkin (?) The History Channel recently did an analysis of that question and concluded that it was the result of ground to air fire, not air to air combat., It is quite possible that he was shot down by an unknown rifleman from the ground.

There has been a number of investigations over the last 20 years as well as countless books on "Who killed the Red Baron". Although A. Roy Brown claimed he had hit the Red Baron's plane and he went down as Brown turned to fly away and leave the scene, the Baron continued to chase Brown's friend, Lt. May for over a mile or more until ground fire from Australian infantry shot him down. There were several machine gunners and numerous individual solders on the ground that poured lead into the air trying to bring the Baron down. The Red Baron was killed by one round from a 303 caliber round that struck him on his right side, apparently hit his heart and exited slightly below his left nipple in his chest. The Baron managed to land the plane without crashing it, but died shortly after he touched down. No one can really ever prove who killed the Baron, but being that only ONE bullet hole was observed on the right side of his plane that lined up with the wound in his body, its quite possible that an individual rifleman in the Australian infantry brought down the Baron.

No matter who shot him, he was quite dead.

He died after being shot by a single .303 bullet. It entered from below the aircraft, through his ribs, through the heart, and the bullet had then just enough energy left to leave his torso and was found later inside his tunic. He remained alive to land the aircraft intact, and died virtually after the landing. The shot was not from an aircraft, although a couple of allied countries tried to claim his death as an aerial victory by one of their own pilots. He was shot by Austraian soldiers from the 4th Machine Gun battalion. The initail confusing factor was that both Aircraft and Soldiers used the same type of ammunition, the .303.

He was actually shot down twice, once in July 6, 1917 where he suffered a head wound and landed behind his own lines and he was fatally shot on April 21, 1918, landing behind enemy lines.
