Viceroyalty of the New Spain
The Spanish called the new colony they established on the site of Tenochtitlan "Mexico City" after conquering the Aztec Empire in the early 16th century.

The colonial Mexico of Spain was known as New Spain or the Viceroyalty of New Spain. The colony was ruled by the Spanish King and he appointed a viceroy, or very high minister, to assist in the running of the colony.
The colony founded by the Spanish in 1610 was Santa Fe, located in present-day New Mexico. It was one of the earliest European settlements in what is now the United States.
The Spanish called their new colony in North America "La Florida," referring to the lush landscape they encountered.
New Mexico is not Spanish. New Mexico translated in to Spanish is "Nuevo Mexico"

When Francisco Vazquez de Coronado first explored these lands, on 1542. The first Spanish settlements on New Mexico was the San Juan de los Caballeros colony, founded by Spanish conquistador Juan de Oñate in 1598.
