Fireplaces and chimneys were invented and developed during the middle ages. They first appeared in northern Europe during the 12th century.

Prior to that time, household heat was provided by a fire in a brazer or on the floor, open in a room. The houses had openings under the eaves to allow smoke out, and the smoke drifted upward and out that way. This was not an efficient way to heat a house, but at the time they believed it helped keep fleas and lice under control. Houses of such a type continued to be used for a long time after chimneys were developed.
