Using the term of "Unionist" places individuals that called themselves by "tag" puts them in the same category of President Abraham Lincoln. Time and time again he expressed the idea that preserving the Union was the most important task or goal that he laid before himself to accomplish. He was against slavery but that issue as important as it was, could not be done unless the United States regained the loyalty of the States of the Confederacy.
