Memory refers to random access memory (RAM) and storage refers to your hard disk space. Hard disk is what you save all you files and operating systems on and ram remembers where to find recently used items in order to bring them back fast. It's like if you think of your house as your storage. All the stuff you own is in your home but stuff you used recently you remember exactly wear it is, like maybe you wallet or keys, and that would be your memory

Usually the term "memory" in computers is referred to RAM.

RAM = Random Access Memory

Memory is the only storage directly accessible to the CPU. The CPU continuously reads instructions stored there and executes them as required. Any data actively operated on is also stored there in uniform manner.

The data stored in RAM is only temporary, RAM cannot hold on to information when the computer is off and so cannot hold any of your files.

Storage is referred to as a device that can hold on to your information indefinitely.

Storage could be a

Hard Drive

CD/DVD/Blu-Ray

Flash Drives

Floppy Disks.

(Dynamic) Memory is:

  • Much faster
  • Closer to the CPU (Thus can transfer data to the CPU faster)
  • Expensive (in terms of cost)
  • Usually volatile: All data in memory will be lost when it has no power.
  • Requires a constant(ish) supply of energy.

Secondary storage is:

  • Slower than memory
  • Fairly cheap
  • Non-volatile
  • Only requires power while in use
  • Easier to get large quantities of data (such as 1TB)

Difference between main memory and backing storage?

Main memory (RAM) is fast, volatile, and used for temporary storage during program execution, while backing storage (like hard drives or SSDs) is slower, non-volatile, and used for long-term storage of data.

What is the Difference between secondary memory and auxiliary memory?

secondary memory is actually the permanent memory/the backing storage of the computer. it is of two types:sequential accessdirect accessauxiliary memory is the computer's internal/temporary memory. it is also of two types:random access memory (RAM)read only memory (ROM)the difference between secondary memory and auxiliary memory is that:-both are same i.e both performs the same operationsthanks.

What is the difference between internal memory and backing storage?

Backing storage is where information can be repeatedly stored and modified in a permanent way and main storage is main storage is understood to be the program addressable memory that houses the executable and data necessary to launch and run various systems and programs. More commonly referred to as primary storage or memory, main storage directly interfaces with the CPU, which reads the instructions connected with the executable and performs the tasks necessary to handle the data. All data necessary for the effective function of programs saved on the hard drive is maintained in the main storage.
