Not much in the way of similarities - except that when they said they would fight to the end, they both meant it.

It was the differences that caused the war.

The difference between a rapidly industrializing North, whose factory-bosses needed free, mobile skilled labour, not feudal slaves, and a traditional South that was tied to the plantation life, resting totally on slavery.

For these reasons, the North wanted to protect its industry by levying tariffs on imports, while it was the South that needed the imports, and they viewed the tariffs as a tax on the South.

It is a matter of curiosity that the two sides can be traced back to the English Civil War. Any knowledge of the two sides - Cavalier and Puritan - shows the parallels. Many American Civil War generals and politicians were actually descended from the same two sets of families.
