The "X-height" is the height of a lowercase letter such as "a" or "m".

If a letter is taller than that, such as "l" or "t'", the part above the X-height is called an "ascender".

If a letter goes beneath the X-height, such as "g" or "p" do, then the part beneath is called a "descender".
