Satay, is a dish/snack popular throughout not only Malaysia and Thailand, but also Indonesia and Philippines. Because satay originated in Indonesia. Satay, simply means "sate", in Malay language. What satay simply is, is skewers of grilled chicken, pork or beef marinaded and dipped in a sweet sauce. Kind of like "pinchos" from Puerto Rico. Satay is a Malaysian/Indonesian style kabobs. Satay varies all over Southeast Asia. "Indonesian satay" can simply refer to the satay eaten in Indonesia, and there is not much differences between the satay eaten in Malaysia, Thailand or Philippines. Since Malaysia and Indonesia are Muslim countries, they don't use pork for satay in those countries. They only use beef, chicken and seafoods. However since Philippines is a mostly Catholic country, satay from Luzon (Philippines's northern most major island) is made with grilled pork. Satay from Visayas and Mindanao are more closer to the original and real satay from Indonesia or Malaysia. Filipinos are also well known for making fish-satay, skewers with grilled fish or squid. Most satay, uses peanut sauce.
It depends what kind of meat is used and how the sauce is prepared. A chicken satay may contain anywhere from 50 to 200 calories depending on how it is prepared.
Also called sate, Satay often consists of chicken, mutton, beer, goat, fish, pork, or tofu. It is often grilled or barbecued and served with a variety of spicy seasonings.
