I love the older trucks. Turn the engine until the timing mark is on top dead center (tdc). The number one piston should be at the top of it's stroke. On a v8, number one is on the right (passenger side) front. On a 6cyl, it's the first one. Drop your distributor in the hole, trun the rotor by hand until the oil pump shaft lines up, it should drop farther in. Where to rotor points to will be your number one position under the cap. Place the plug wire for number one on it. The firing order is imprinted on the intake. I think it turns counter-clockwise. Place the wires in the order imprinted on the intake. If it doesn't run, or back-fires, it's 180 degrees out of time. Retry. Hope this helps.
