During the Australian gold rush, the Chinese neither liked nor disliked the Australians. Because of this, they were mistrusted by the Australians, who would sometimes turn on them, threatening their property. This in turn caused the Chinese to fear the Australians.

How would you describe Australians?

There is no simple way to describe Australians. Australians are easy-going, but quite fiercely loyal to their friends (usually referred to as "mates"). They are a mixture of hard-workers and layabouts, intellectuals and honest labourers who believe in a hard day's work. They can be knocked down by tragedy, but most of them will always get back up again and forge ahead. They are freedom-lovers who enjoy beaches and sun, outback and fresh air, bulldust and the feel of a good rain after a long dry period. They are not demonstrative with their affections, but nor do they hold themselves back from others.
