If they are the ones I'm thinking about (Anolis carolinensis, the green anole), which can turn from green to brown, then yes, they can bite but no they can't hurt you. They will bite you to defend themselves but you won't feel a thing. They will hang onto your finger and not let go right away. But again, you won't feel a thing. If this happens, put your hand back on the side of the house or on a tree to give it a chance to let go and run away. You might have to gently try to pry its mouth open to make it let go but be very careful because you may injure the lizard's mouth while doing this. If these lizards are very big, they may be an introduced exotic species (there are several of these in south Florida) which might hurt you if it bit because it is so large (Anolis equistris is one that comes to mind). But if it is only about 4 -5 inches in length from head to tail it is probably the harmless green anole.

Do lizards bite humans?

Yes, most lizards bite. Some lizards squirt blood through their naked eye, whilst other lizards wave their tail to scare predators away. Yes, most lizards can bite as a weapon for self defense. However lizards that are kept in captivity, such as iguanas, are less likely to bite humans because they are used to human contact. Some lizards give a warning before biting - if a lizard opens its mouth wide, swells and hisses at the same time, this is a warning that it may be about to bite.
