Spain is a constitutional monarchy and as such has a king and not a president as head of state. The current king is Juan Carlos I who succeeded the dictator, General Franco, in 1975. Franco had conducted a military coup in 1931, deposing Juan Carlos' grandfather, King Alfonso XIII.
The country is a parliamentary democracy and the head (Prime Minister) of the government is (normally) the leader of the largest party following elections. The current Spanish Prime Minister is Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero
