Airline pilot is a step down the long road that starts at small airports teaching students, then some years of flying cargo. it's also common to go up and down the career ladder since the last hired is the first laid off and airlines are constantly hiring and then laying off. Sometimes it seems like they're doing it at the same time. It's common to be hired, and then during orientation get laid off.
