Autism Spectrum Disorder encompasses a wide-spectrum of individual people whose intelligence levels mirror much of the typical population. Some autistic children are intellectually gifted, while others have cognitive delays and disabilities. Children and adults with Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism, tended to have normal to higher than normal IQ's and a higher level of fluid intelligence than the general population. Measuring intelligence is a difficult feat, especially among a those children with developmental delays that can hinder the typical measurement process (i.e. IQ tests, etc.). It is sometimes assumed that those with communication difficulties/delays, or those who are non-verbal (having little to no speech) have lower levels of intelligence; this however, is not the case. The ability to communicate is not indicative of the ability to understand, or the intelligence level of the child.

Why do people with autism think like animals?

Autistic people do not think like animals. It is offensive to suggest that Autistic people (not 'people with autism') think like animals, we think like people because we are people.

When were autistic people considered people by people in society?

I think we were always considered people but many people did (and a considerable amount still do) see us as lesser beings because we were different to them or lacked social skills. I think even in an autistic society some will treat typical people as lesser because I know some autistic people (mainly on autistic networks) who can't stand typical people because of cultural differences(although our cultural differences are considered strange because we look like everyone from the culture we were born into)

My 2.5 year-old doesn't speak till now but he looks normal would he still be autistic?

If your child is Autistic then they will always be Autistic, that cannot change as Autism is part of their neurology and who they are. I'm not entirely sure why 'looks normal' is a reason to think his Autism is in question, Autistic people look no different to neurotypical people. Please, if your child is Autistic you need to learn about Autism.

Should people treat autism as a tragedy?

Many parents do struggle with their autistic child and are concerned about their future. Autism doesn't mean a child/adult who is mentally handicapped. Autistic brains think different and many autistic people only deserved to be understood and not treated like they're sick or handicapped. Autistic children/adults are not sick or handicapped. Many parents should try to understand their autistic child instead of being scared all the time.

Are autistic people like Sherlock?

On one hand autistic individuals are not mystery machines or pyschics. People should never compare them that way. They're still people but just think in pictures and sounds

Why don't autistic people like being called normal?

Some autistic people don't mind being normal, they tried passing for normal because of being bullied and judged in different ways. Now they know how being normal affects them. Yes, they think that's how people are going to get attached to them- but some decide to stick with their autistic behavior. They don't like how being normal affects them and they know it's making other people happy but not themselves.

Could autistics marry other autistics?

I am high functioning Autistic and I believe there are "Autistic types", kind of like categories of personality and compatibility. I could date another Autistic person if they were like me and would love to marry one but could never marry a typical person(can't stand living with them, no offence) I think how many Autistic people its easier to marry or date another autistic person and most Autistic on autistic relationships I know are far happier and longer than Autistic on NeuroTypical relationships. I would love to marry an autistic guy.

Will my autistic friend die faster than me?

Maybe. I think autistic death rates are the same as non-autistic death rates.

What are some things you shouldn't say to autistic people?

There are number of things you shouldn't say to an autistic individual. Don't judge them as lazy, antisocial, or selfish or stubborn. Don't say to them "you don't look autistic" or "you seem normal" because they know you think they're lying that they have autism. Most people say people with autism unable to communicate. There are some people with autism who can communicate. Don't say to them "you seem very high-functioned" Verbal autistic individuals can have their struggles also almost as bad as non verbal autistic individual. Don't compare an autistic person as a normal person. There are most autistic individuals that don't want to be compared to normal people.

Why don't some autistic people like being called normal?

Some people with autism have tried passing for normal because of being bullied or judged in the past. And they knew later on how it affected them. Being normal can block out our energy and can drain out everything in us. If we were being normal everyday, we would be boring. Some autistic people don't mind being called normal. But for some, they do find it offensive-same with me. Because they think that's how neurotypical people would approve of them. Autistic people should not be ashamed of being autistic-even I'm not. If some people don't approve their autistic behavior-it's mostly their problem. Autistic people shouldn't try to be someone that they truly aren't to impress other people and so people around them wouldn't feel embarresed.

When people have autism do they know they have it?

Presumably, when they are diagnosed they are told. It also depends on how severe the autism is. If it is a mild case, just to do with socialising, they know and usually understand. If it is very severe, like if they cannot talk, then they probably don't know, or understand.

Do autistic people have empathy?

Saying that an autistic child has lack of empathy is a myth. It's not true when some doctors have said they don't know what love is and how to care for other people. Autistic individuals know empathy, and they know how the other person feels. They do care.
