The church covenant can be different for many church congregations. some do say to refrain from strong drink. It can be interpreted to mean not to get drunk and others say to not partake. Temperance movements were very much involved in the establishing the church covenant in the USA.

The covenant implies to be in the world but not of the world. Nazarite beliefs have members set aside a part of themselves as a dedication to service. Samson did not cut his hair. Some do not go to places that sell alcohol like dances. Some try to identify anything that might be a stumbling block to their service and testimony.

There are a variety of Baptist sects. Most frown on alcohol, but not all prohibit it.
