I am a newly qualified nurse who has worked in Ghana, so my experience is limited. I have been researching into this exact question with regards to circulatory shock. Many books give information on skin colour becoming pale & greyish, but information on brown skin is scarce. When I was in Ghana I saw a number of patients go into critical condition (sometimes circulatory shock) and there was a definite change in skin colour. They didn't go a lighter shade of brown but it appeared as if there was a chalky white tone to the existing colour. & finally I'm a light skinned black man myself and so have definitely seen a paler version of me in the mirror when I've been very ill.
I'm in the middle of research so i hope to soon be able to provide a more definitive answer.

Stay away from pastel colors. I have lighter hair/pale skin, so people say I look great in darker greens and burnt oranges. Fall is definetly our time, because we can wear deeper rich tones. White and Black alone or together tend to wash us out, much like pastel colors! Hope this helps. I have pale skin and pale is beautiful.. no joke.. i would go with pastel colors if you have blue eyes but if you have green or brown i would go with darker greens and burnt oranges too. :)
