The ghosts of Roman centurions have been reported in Britain, most notably around the city of York and at Hadrian's Wall.

Among ghost hunters, the centurions' ghosts are notable. Initially, paranormal researchers thought the ghosts were missing their lower legs. Then, people realized that the ghosts were still walking along the roads and paths that existed in their time. Those surfaces were deeper than the current land above them, so the ghosts' lower legs seemed concealed by the dirt (and other materials) that had been added during more recent centuries.
