Yes, but that is not all. They support more sounds (Doom3 example) Some soundcards can only Mix 8-32 number of Channels. The High End ones usaually can mix 128-512 channels, Allowing for alot more detail, like Echos of each shot from a chaingun and each riccochet. Also sound effects like tracking a sound in a 3d field (Bullet wizzing by) can be done by the higher end soundcards instead of the CPU, offloading More performance. Also they are usually more isolated from other noise in the system. (Crank up the volume and start typeing or copying a file, On cheaper cards you can hear it, others it's quieter, (Silent maybe on the USB based ones, But I haven't tried one yet) More importantly, how good are the speakers. I still have a set of Altec Lansings from 5 years ago, 10" Sub and 300Watts power. The $50 set given to me last Chistmas because they were cool, sounded like crap. (Good, but not as good)
