Sort of. There is an asteroid headed in earths direction, scientists just haven't calculated if it will hit or miss. They feel strongly that it will come within 26 thousand miles of earth. However they are not yet certain of that. This will not happen till 2029. If the asteroid does hit earth it will end ALL life on earth, it will sterilize our planet. The asteroid I believe is the size of manhattan.
Meteors hit the earth every day. Fortunately, the vast majority of them are tiny and cause no significant damage. However, sooner or later (probably thousands or millions of years from now) a large meteor will hit the earth.
The Earth is hit by thousands of meteors every day. Most are too small to be noticed, but occasionally a big one can make quite a flash.
Scientists rarely have any advance knowledge of meteors before they hit; they are too small, too dark, and too fast. But there is one asteroid that is big enough to see which will come close to the Earth. But it will miss. We think.
The asteroid Apophis will pass near the Earth in 2029 and 2036.
The answer has got to be yes. However, WHEN is another question. The Earth has been hit many times before in it's 4.5 billion year existance, and I'm sure it will be hit in the future. But large events are rare.
On a lighter note, there are none expected, nor observed and a team of scientists, and the military are tracking hundreds of potential objects, just in case.

While scientists have not discovered (or at least, announced) any space rocks headed toward Earth, the fact is that THOUSANDS of meteors strike the Earth each day. Hundreds of thousands, more likely. Most of them are the size of a grain of rice or smaller, but a few hundred each day are Baseball sized or larger. Very few are dangerously large.
So far, scientists have only discovered ONE fairly large body before it struck the Earth; it was discovered 16 hours before impact in November, 2008. The object struck the Earth and exploded without any known damage over East Africa.
There are currently no known large comets or asteroids headed toward earth. Small ones burn up when they enter our atmosphere. ________________________________________ Given that we expect the Earth to exist for another 4 or 5 billion years, then yes, a comet will certainly hit the Earth. But we don't know when; it could be 100 years from now, a thousand years from now, or a million years from now. Or more. The point is, comets have hit the Earth before, and will surely do so again. Scientists now believe that a comet or asteroid probably struck northern Canada about 13,000 years ago, causing the "Younger Dryas" ice age and driving the mammoths and saber-toothed tigers to extinction, and killing most of the human beings on North America. A comet or similar impactor probably caused the extinction of the dinosaurs, and 250 million years ago, SOMETHING killed off 95% of all life on Earth - the "Permian Extinction", it's called.
No
an asteroid is not coming twords earth in 2012.
They said it would come a long time ago and nothing happened.
so no need to worry. Scientest are still triing to build a machine that will make the asteroid
go in another direction but they don't know whats going to happen yet.
(like anything is going to happen)
Probably - meteors are a constant event. Most of them are too small to cause any damage, and the ones that do enter the atmosphere (meteorites) tend to burn up into nothing. Meteors are what many people call "shooting stars".
Occasionally, large enough chunks do continue through the atmosphere, hitting the earth's surface. They can cause damage to cars and houses.
However, there are currently none large enough to make a significant impact.
Not usually, but sometimes; sometimes the Earth even collides with small asteroids! Perhaps you wouldn't call a rock 1 meter in diameter an "asteroid", but a rock about that size collided with Illinois on April 15, 2010, startling millions of earthlings with a brilliant explosion in the sky.
You can watch the video of it at spaceweather.com, at the link below.
Larger asteroids sometimes come quite close to the Earth; there was one about 3 months ago that passed in between the Earth and the Moon. And on Friday, April 13, 2029, the asteroid Apophis will come within 20,000 miles of the Earth - but it will miss.
Most asteroids are in the "asteroid belt", a roughly toroidal (meaning "doughnut-shaped") region of space between Mars and Jupiter.
No. There are always comets coming into the inner solar system, and most of them are too small to be noticed without a telescope. For example, in January 2011, over a dozen comets were observed falling into the Sun!
But we have no indication that a comet is heading toward any kind of unusually close pass by the Earth. Haley's Comet, which was so unimpressive and distant on its last pass in 1986, _should_ be closer and more impressive during its NEXT pass - in 2061.
In the long run - the VERY long run! - yes, there will be comets that will be on a trajectory that will strike the Earth. It has happened many times before, and will again. This may be hundreds or thousands - or hundreds OF thousands! - of years in the future, but it will happen someday.
But not today.
The Orbit of Comet Halley is an elongate ellipse, yes, but it does not orbit earth - it orbits the sun.
a comet that passes around earth every 76 years. It has gone by in 1835, 1910, 1986, and will return in 2061
It's a huge comet that orbits the solar system passing close to earth every 75 or so years. Some scientist believe it gets closer to earth each time it passes, maybe it might hit us one day.
Halley's comet is unique is that it takes 76 years to be visible from the earth on like other comets that can be seen annually
As of May 20, 2014 the next comet that will be coming by the Earth is Comet Faye at the end of May 2014. In June 2014, Comet Brooks 2 will be passing the Earth.

2061
Around the earth and past the sun.
No it didn't, it will return!

In the year 2061 it is scheduled to pass by earth.
No. The only way a comet could cause a catastrophe would be if it collided with Earth. The orbit of Halley's Comet keeps it at a safe distance from us.

Probably around the year 2060, depending on how good our telescopes are by then.

Halley's Comet has never been 10 miles above Earth. It is always millions of miles from us, even when closest to us. It was last visible from Earth in 1986. It will next be visible in 2061.
