Wild and domestic rats can live in groups, and generally have one alpha rat. Much like wolf packs, wild rats will have an alpha and a beta in their group. The alpha is allowed to groom the others, and can tell the group what to do in other ways. The alpha will warn the group if there is trouble/danger. Domestic rats should live in pairs or larger groups, and one rat will naturally become the alpha. The size of the rat is not the determining factor. It's all about personality. The alpha rat in a domestic family will be the one to accept or reject a new coming, and all the followers stay in line with their dominant rat. Therefore, when 2 groups are meeting, and there are 2 alphas, one alpha will emerge as the primary leader and accept the former alpha as a follower. (That being said, it might take many introductions to have this go successfully without bloodshed).
