There are different modes of eruption. Composite volcanoes are best known for explosive eruptions that send out plumes of ash, gas, and pumice. At other times they send out lava flows which may not resemble the typical conception of a lava flow. And still at other times a composite volcano can produce lava viscous enough that it builds into a dome rather than flowing away.
In very large explosive eruptions composite volcanoes can collapse in on themselves, forming a large crater called a caldera.

Occasionally, yes, but that is the exception rather than the rule. Most eruptions at shield volcanoes are effusive, but explosive phreatic eruptions, essentially steam explosions, can sometimes occur.

Stratovolcno are composed of ash and rock. Mount Fuji is an example of a stratovolcano. This type of volcano is also known as a composite volcano.

Are composite volcanoes predominantly erupting with lava flows?

No. Composite volcanoes erupt mostly ash and pumice.

What are facts about strato volcanoes?

Did you know that composite volcanoes make up 60% of the Earths volcanoes. Composite volcanoes don't always have to erupt from the top. They can have many magma chambers and can erupt from the sides. They can be made of basalt, rhyolite and/or andesite. They erupt both ash and lava. The lava is very thick. When the time comes for the volcano to erupt they start to become very quiet. (Sneaky eh?)

Do all volcanoes erupt with ash?

Cinder cone volcanoes erupt explosively, but not as violently as composite volcanoes.

Do composite volcanoes blow out smoke and ash or lava?

ash

What kind of mafic lava do composite volcanoes have?

Composite volcanoes usually do not erupt mafic material. Intermediate material is the most common. The mafic material they do erupt is usually basalt.

Do volcanoes erupt just lava?

No. Volcanoes also release ash and a variety of gasses.

Do volcanoes produce large amounts of ash when they erupt?

Volcanoes with high levels of water in their lava produce ash, those with dry lava produce no ash.

What are some interesting facts about composite volcanoes?

composite means ''made of separate layers'' and a composite volcano is made of many layers of lava and ash. they are one of the most dangerous volcanoes , because they explode when they erupt. although, they are extremely quiet between eruptions. that's all i got, but i hope it helps!

Why do cinder cone volcanoes erupt ash and rock?

they are made out of rock
