What is the difference between a funeral director coroner and a mortician?

Funeral Director typically directs the operations of the funeral. Makes sure the funeral is running smoothly as it can and takes care of any problems that might arise. They are sorta the leader in charge before, during, and after a funeral. Typically they are viewed as THE person that repersents the funeral home. During the funeral.Mortician is behind the scenes person typically you will never see a mortician at a funeral itself or if they are they typically do not make themselfs very well known. Their job bascially is to beautify the deceased. This includes dressing the deceased and putting on makeup. Makeup is applied to both a male deceased or female deceased. This is to help improve skin color on the deceased. Typically clothing is picked out by the family and the mortician then dress's the deceasesd with it. Some family's require hair to be curled for female deceased and for male deceased there hair neatly comb. Perfumes may or may not be added on the deceased. It has always been my view that morticians try to make the deceased look like there sleeping then actually looking dead. This provides the family with some deal of comfort during a trying time.In small funeral homes often the funeral directors acts as a mortician as well.A funeral director is a person who arranges for funerals to take place, and a coroner is a person who examines dead bodies in order to determine the cause of death. There is relatively little similarity between the two, although they both deal with corpses.

Am i responsilbe for my deceased mom's funeral costs?

Funerals take place when someone hires a funeral home to perform one. Funerals don't just happen spontaneously. Whoever arranged for the funeral is obligated to pay for it. If you do not want to pay for a funeral, don't arrange one.

Is there a need for delivering the deceased to funeral homes?

No, not if you decide to take care of your deceased loved one yourself. In today's culture it has generally become the 'norm' for families to just employ the services of a funeral home to undertake the care of their dead. This was not always the case, and in fact there is more of a movement now towards 'home funerals', or certainly families taking care of their own dead. This means that a family would not have to have their deceased loved one taken to a funeral home. They could conduct the care at home and arrange the burial or cremation directly themselves. There are however a few states where local legislation requires that a funeral director has to be employed to certify the death certificate and burial permit. To my knowledge New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Indiana all require this. There are numerous resources that can assist and support you if you decide to undertake home funeral care.

How did the tradition of open casket funerals start?

The tradition of open casket funerals began when the first Europeans to settle in North America brought with them the tradition of laying the body out inside the home before it was buried. It was during this time that neighbours could visit the home of the bereaved and take a final look at the deceased. This act of viewing the dead soon became part of what modern funerals call the "wake".Because there was no modern funeral home, cabinet and furniture makers were commissioned to "undertake" the task of building the caskets for the deceased, which would require them to go to the home and take measurements of the body before building the caskets in their shops.Eventually, as the modern funeral home began to take form after the Civil War, funeral homes continued to use the tradition of the "wake", which was once a three day/night vigil to ensure the deceased was in dead as loved ones "watched" over the body.

Who pays a funeral home for expenses and when do you pay for it?

The funeral expenses should be paid for out of an individual's estate before anything is paid to beneficiaries. This is usual language in wills and trusts. This must be paid for when services are rendered. However if a person is still living they can prearrange their planning with a licensed funeral director prior to this event. Usually if the individual is deceased the Executor and or Trustee will take care of this.
