OJT (On the Job Training) is still one of the best methods of training new employees. Showing someone how to perform a task then having them repeat it holds an extremely high retention level. There are a lot of companies that still do OJT.

Normal OJT is done by someone who is experienced performing the task at the job. Sometimes companies cannot afford to have an experienced employee take the time to do this, so they turn to other methods that may or may not be as effective, such as asynchronous training (web based learning, eLearning modules, manuals, etc.). While this may save the company money by way of a one time fee, depending on the task it could save the company wages / productivity, but leave them with a lower skilled worker. (Manufacturing is a perfect example of somewhere OJT would be a perfect answer.)

Many instructional designers use methods to assist companies in determining the best solution for their training needs.
