Generally, Australia's climate is warm, and koalas thrive in warmer regions, but they are by no means restricted to warm areas alone. Koalas can be found in a range of climatic conditions, as long as they have their food requirements met. They are known to inhabit cooler areas of southern Australia, including sub-alpine regions, and extend north up the Queensland coast (sub-tropical, but not rainforests) and inland where the weather is hotter and drier.

They are found right along the eastern coast down to Victoria, and in pockets of eastern South Australia, where summer temperatures can exceed 40 degrees and winter temperatures drop to almost zero.

They are not found in alpine areas.

Koalas can only survive where their favoured eucalyptus trees live. While there are hundreds of different eucalyptus species in Australia, koalas eat from only about 60 of the species, consuming about half a kilogram of eucalyptus leaves every day. Koalas will not eat all types of eucalyptus, feeding on just 14 species as their primary food source, specifically, the subgenus Symphyomyrphus. The only truly cold places in Australia are the Alpine areas, and there are none of this subgenus of gum trees in that environment.

Tasmania, Australia's island state, can be cooler than the mainland states, and koalas are not found in the wild in Tasmania.

No, koalas do not live in the tundra. Koalas require eucalyptus bushland in temperate or sub-tropical zones of eastern Australia. Tundra is too cold. Australia's only tundra is on Mt Kosciuszko and nearby high country, which does not support the eucalyptus trees koalas need for their survival.
