Probably yes. Fucoxanthin is the carotenoid [from pills] that is most strongly correlated with weight loss. Another marine carotenoid [from pills], astaxanthin, is also strongly correlated with weight loss but not quite as strongly as fucoxanthin. Lutein and lycopene [from foods] are definitely correlated with weight loss very, very strongly. However, most of that weight reducing tendency derives from the fact that vegetable eaters and fish eaters tend to lose weight while meat eaters, dairy food eaters, processed/refined food eaters, and starchy/sugary food eaters tend to gain weight. In one study, increased bodily levels of lutein were correlated to weight loss but the researchers hypothesized that when the body fat melted away, lutein was released into the blood from the body fat.

In my opinion, the other possibility is that all beneficial phytochemicals/antioxidants help to cause weight loss. That's why vegetable eaters lose weight and nut eaters don't gain weight, even though nuts are extremely high in calories.
