no they dont die at birth. They may have shorter lives than regular cats. The reason of male calicos appearing is because there was something wrong in the sex cell of the parent. Most likely an extra chromosome or a mutated one

Yes, there can be male calico cats as well as male torti cats, however they are born sterile and cannot reproduce.

Its generally not a good idea to let a male cat near kittens as he may harm them.

no they dont harm the kittens but they dont care for the kittens - my experience with our cats :(
