Yes they do this to keep it warm and protect it. The male penguin hold the egg while he is holding it the mother goes out to get fish for the penguin when it gets back once it has hatched. After the penguin is born the parent continues to hold the penguin because it has not yet developed enough feathers to warm itself and sustain itself on its own.
