You know this is a very interesting question. And something that interests all, because death affect us all. The Bible has an answer to that very question. It is found at Ecclesiastes 9:5 where it says, " For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing at all..." In this scripture, we see that the dead know nothing at all, it is like they are in a sleep-like state. there are examples in the Bible where someone is resurrected, but there is no mention of there being an after life. But lets think about this, if there is no life after death, What hope do our loved ones who have passed have? The bible has a hope set out for all of us, that is of life on a paradise earth, with the prospect of living forever. that hope is extended to our dead loved ones, if you look at John 5:28,29 it gives us that hope. It says, "Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice, and come out..." we have a hope to one day be able to see our dead loved ones again, and enjoy life in a paradise earth forever. Without all the evils and suffering we see today.
