No, they don't, if what you mean is "Do dogs understand English" for example. It may seem so, but what happens often is that dogs train US to do their bidding, so it appears that some kind of mental/verbal communication is going on. Dogs understand our behaviors (body language) on some level, and they respond to our rewards and other behaviors in predictable ways. I'm not dissing dogs, or claiming that they have no 'feelings'. I LOVE dogs. But training dogs involves much much more than our incorrect ideas about their understanding of our speech. Watch the Dog Whisperer. One of the best programs on TV.
Sometimes. The easiest words to understand from a dog are, "FEED ME!" I believe scientists are trying to discover the secret to this "dog language" ,but not too much has been discovered. In the mean time try to guess what your pooch is saying!
they shure do
Some people kill dogs for food in places such as China, but some people abuse dogs, don't feed them, or they are in bad medical condition. People do not understand what dogs do for us.
They all help help people. K9 dogs: find injured people and get them out alive. Guide dogs: help people understand their surroundings to keep them alive. And Guard dogs: Keep people away from dangerous things therefore keeping them alive and well.
Yes! Mostly when you train them, although all dogs should know what you mean if you are pointing at something.
Sometimes, yes. A tornado is a frighting event for people and animals alike. Some dogs express that fear by barking, though they do not understand what the tornado is.

Dogs can understand certain words that you use a lot to them such as food. if you said food enough and showed them what it meant they would understand it evantually. Dogs can understand tone of voice though so if you use a nice tone of voice they think your being nice even if your not.
