Shell color is determined SOLELY by breed. Some lay white, some lay brown and some (Aracaunas and Americaunas) lay green. What they eat, the color of the feathers, have NOTHING to do with it. Also, there is absolutely NO difference in the nutritional value between them (assuming they've been fed the same diet). Some people INSIST that there is a difference in taste between brown and white eggs. Embarrassingly to them, though, taste tests have consistently proven they they CAN'T tell the difference!

∙ 10y agoAll chicks get half their genes from the male and half from the female. The male offspring get one Z from the papa (and half of his other genes) and one Z from the mama (and half of her other genes). The female offspring get one Z from the male (and half of his other genes) and and one W from the female (and half of her other genes).
- note: chicken sex genes (Z & W) are not like human sex genes (X & Y).
- The hen is ZW and the rooster is ZZ
The egg color is determined by the dominant allele. All the chicks should carry the dominant color but the resulting color of their eggs will be a blend, depending on what color their mother's eggs were. If your hens lay white eggs, the offspring should produce shades of whatever the rooster came out of.
