I assume you are talking about sewing needles. Yes they do rust. They are made of metal which consists of iron. When exposed to moisture and oxygen, iron will rust (try looking up iron oxide I think is the correct term). Salt also speeds up the rusting process.

I do a lot of hand needlework and quite often I will hold the needle between my lips and I know that they tend to rust quicker if they aren't used as often. I figure it has to do with the moisture from my lips as well as the acids in saliva. If I use the needle quite often it tends to not rust as quickly. I have made the mistake of leaving a needle pinned in fabric I am working on and coming back to the project a few weeks later to find rust forming and staining the fabric.
