The Taleban have considerable influenvce in todays afghansistan, mainly through brute force evidenced in the very recent November Kabul attacks which highlight the continued presence and instabilty in the state.
Culturally it is hard to say whether the Taliban truly reflect the views of the people ( personally i think conservatism does not mean extremism) but as it is a religious, patriachial and conservative society the Taliban may have more influence over the people than the NATO forces.
They didn't - they were a faction of Afgan rebel fighters already there.

The Taliban are an Islamist fundamentalist political group in Afghanistan. Political groupings or parties mainly seek to take power and enforce their beliefs, policies, and ideals.
1) The Taliban, a radical regime which quickly seized power in Afghanistan following the end of the Soviet-Afghan War, and 2) the Northern Alliance which was supported by the US and controlled the northern part of Afghanistan.
No.They didn't.Well, not ALL of it. (I know this because I'm a 9 year old girl from Afghanistan.) The Northern Alliance, a group of warlords and sheikhs that controlled the country prior to the Taliban held some of the rural areas in northeastern Afghanistan (10% of the country) throughout the 1990s and up to the American Invasion. However, the Taliban controlled all major urban centers in Afghanistan and were the dominant political force in Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001.
The War in Afghanistan has not resulted in the elimination of the Taliban and they have regrouped within Pakistan. The fact that the Taliban has successfully resisted their annihilation is a point to them, but it is a far cry from "winning". The Taliban was pushed out of power and they remain out of power.

The taliban.
From 1990 to 2001, but they did not control all of the country for the entire time. The US-backed Northern Alliance (aka the United Front in Afghanistan) already controlled a very large area of the northern part of Afghanistan before the Taliban was finally removed removed from power.
In 2001, Afghanistan was ruled by the Taliban regime. The Taliban were good friends with al-Qaeda, Osama bin Laden's terrorist organization, and let them hang out in their country. After the 9/11 attacks, the U.S. demanded that the Taliban hand over al-Qaeda's leaders. The Taliban naturally refused, so the U.S. invaded to remove the Taliban from power.
