Sometimes they keep them. Sometimes they will be placed with someone else. It depends on the dog and the handler's situation. The military dogs are treated much better now than in the past. For example, in the Vietnam era the dogs were often left behind as surplus equipment.

What all can a service dog wear when working?

A service dog CAN wear just about anything the handler wants them to. SHOULD a service dog handler be presenting their dog in such a way...maybe not so much if they want to maintain a semi proffesional image with the public. The only thing a service dog HAS to wear is a collar or harness for restraint purposes, and a leash per the Americans with Disabilities Act. Anything else is optional according to the handlers needs and wishes.

How many trainers for one police dog?

the answer is generally ONE. A police dog is trained with its handler so they learn together. It takes about 13 weeks from the start to finish generally. Normally there will be one trainer in charge of the dog and handlers training. Of course dogs will train until they eventually retire after about eight years service.
